2010 Summer School Program Announcement

Students selected by institutions represented in AIT’s US Advisory Council are invited to participate in helping shape AIT’s curriculum and structure by attending a unique summer program in Budapest June 10 – July 12, 2010. Students may take courses in creative computer engineering, design and entrepreneurship; discrete mathematics, computational biology and medicine, and will get immersed in Budapest’s cultural and city life.

Participants will help initiate a unique international educational program in Budapest. Students in AIT's full program in future will earn up to about 20 credits (subject to acceptance by the sending institutions). Participants of this Summer School pilot program may earn about 6-8 credits, and will receive a full tuition waiver in exchange for providing substantial feedback on all aspects of the AIT program. (Full tuition at AIT in future, following this pilot program, will be $13,000 per semester of study.)

The 2010 Summer Program offers 10 courses organized in the following three areas:

  • Creative Computer Engineering, Design, and Entrepreneurship
  • Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science
  • Advanced Applications in Computational Biology and Medicine

No specific prerequisites are expected from students.

In addition, a diverse range of extracurricular activities are offered for exploring the historic heritage and contemporary cultural life of Budapest and the region. Extracurricular programs are generally scheduled in late afternoons and weekends and will be organized so as not to overlap each other.

AIT will provide credit transfer on behalf of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Credits are subject to acceptance by the sending institutions. In case of acceptance the sending university will guide selection of which courses may be taken by which students at AIT for credit. Students participate in AIT’s program while remaining enrolled at the sending university.

In the summer pilot program the expected total number of students will be 15-25. Each student is instructed to select up to six classes, of which they will end up taking typically 3-4 courses. This enables effective scheduling during this pilot program. Classes with fewer than 5 enrolled students will not be held.

Schedule

Date of Arrival: June 10th - 11th, 2010.

Orientation Day: June 12th, 2010 – introductions, getting familiar with AIT and the city, sightseeing.

Inaugural ceremony of Aquincum Institute of Technology: June 19th, combined with the 25th anniversary reunion of the Budapest Semester in Mathematics (BSM) with a joint party at the AIT campus.

Academic Period: During the four-week academic period from June 14th to July 9th we advise students to take 3-4 courses. Courses – unless otherwise noted - will meet 3 times per week (for 2 x 50 minutes per occasion). There is no course-work on the weekends and several extracurricular programs are offered.

We recommend that students stay for the weekend of July 10th–11th after the academic program for the Balaton Sound Festival. This lively festival on Lake Balaton offers a wide range of musical programs and would be a perfect conclusion to the AIT-Budapest Summer School 2010 program.

Proposed Departure from Budapest: July 12th, 2010.
